Berkshire Bach Ensemble Legacy Archive

BERKSHIRE BACH ENSEMBLE LEGACY ARCHIVE

Compiled by Kenneth Cooper and Peter Weitzner, this Archive surveys and documents the performances of the Berkshire Bach Ensemble during the tenure of its music director, Kenneth Cooper (3/3/1991 – 1/1/2017). The Berkshire Bach Ensemble, the instrumental wing of the Berkshire Bach Society founded in 1989, is comprised of world-renowned artists, all virtuoso soloists and superlative chamber music specialists, who have come together in the Berkshires over the years to play Bach and other great music, and offer their immense gifts to a devoted and enthusiastic public.

Our Archive includes eighty-three complete works – masterpieces of all sorts by thirteen composers – from live performances in thirty-eight concerts by eighty-eight artists. (The only studio recording is Bach’s Goldberg Variations, which was released by Berkshire Bach as BBS 2005). We have, with very few exceptions, chosen not to edit these performances, so as to convey to all our listeners as true an image as possible of the actual events. The value of live performances is a tribute to the authenticity of these exquisite works, and to the supreme skill, depth, concentration and vision of our extraordinary musicians.

We extend our profound thanks to the Berkshire Bach board, to our generous donors and sponsors (especially WMHT and NEPR public radio CTSB-11 Community Television and the Charles and Mildred Schnurmacher Foundation), to our audio and video specialists (especially Brian Peters, Phil Davis, David Merrill, Christopher Greenleaf, Silas Brown, Alan Esner and Peter Weitzner), to our harpsichord technician Robert Turner, to our hundreds of members, to our thousands of listeners and to our founders, Simon and Eva Wainrib. We hope that in preserving this part of our legacy, we challenge the very essence of concert going – its temporality – and we treasure the art and technology of the recording process, which, like photography, enables us to become relatively immortal. We are hoping that Bach himself, already immortal, will also – someday – register his appreciation.
