Ethan Chen, violin

Eighteen-year-old violinist Ethan Chen was born in Taipei, Taiwan. He started playing violin at age seven and has been studying with Nanette Chen since 2008. In 2009, Ethan won first prize at the Taiwan Baroque Music Competition. In 2012, he was invited as a soloist to perform “Winter” from Vivaldi’s Four Seasons in Shanghai as a part of the United Youth Orchestra Concert. The following summer he participated in the Qingdao International Music Festival in China. Ethan moved to the US in 2013 and is currently studying with Hyo Kang and I-Hao Lee at the Juilliard Pre-College Division. In 2014, he won the division’s concerto competition, granting him the opportunity to perform the Wieniawski Violin Concerto No. 2 with the Pre-College Symphony.

Ethan Chen is this year’s recipient of the Clara Collens Violin Scholarship, named in honor of our board member, Richard Collens’ late mother. We thank Richard for arranging the special appearance of Ethan and his colleagues at this celebratory event.

Megan Yao, violin

Born in 1999 in Kaohsiung city, Taiwan, Megan started playing the violin at age 5. Megan previously studied with professor Nanette Chen in Taiwan. In 2013, she was a finalist in the Taiwan National Orchestra Competition. Megan attended summer music festivals such as Qingdao International Music Festival in 2013 and Green Mountain Music Festival for the past two years. Megan was accepted to the Juilliard Pre-College Division in 2014. She is currently studying with professor Hyo Kang and professor I-Hao Lee.

Max Bobby, cello

16 year-old Max Bobby studies cello at the Juilliard Pre-College Division with Richard Aaron and Sieun Lin. He began his studies at the Hoff Barthelson School of Music with Maxine Neumann. Max was a semifinalist in the 2015 Stulberg International String Competition. In 2011, he won a gold medal from AADGT International Competition and performed at Carnegie Hall. There, he received a full scholarship to the Vianden International Music Festival where he performed solo and with chamber groups. He was also a winner in the OCA-WHV Rising Stars competition. In past summers Max has attended the Indiana Summer Strings Academy, Meadowmount School of Music, Morningside Music Bridge, Bowdoin International Music Festival, and Music@Menlo.
