Simon Wainrib was born in Wiesbaden, Germany in 1922. His first twenty years were spent one step ahead of the rising Nazi party, on the move through France, Spain and eventually to London, a story that is captured in his memoir “Escapes”. From London, Simon fought with the Free French forces, and returned to Paris, the city he considered home, after the end of the War. In the late 1940’s, Simon made his final move, to New York, where he met his wife, Eva, and started his family. Simon and Eva eventually discovered and fell in love with the Berkshires, where they spent weekends and summers before permanently moving to the Berkshires in the early 1980’s.
Simon began an active retirement life and realized his dream of dedicating himself to music and the arts. Simon was the founding member of the Berkshire Bach Society, taught Bach for elder hostels, served as the music critic for the Berkshire Record, and published his memoirs about growing up in war-torn Europe and the profound influence of music in his life.
Simon passed away peacefully on March 10, 2013. He leaves behind a legacy of love of life and music and will be remembered fondly by his adoring family and vast circle of friends. Simon is survived by his wife, Eva Wainrib, his brothers, Charles Wainrib of Montreal and Jules Wainrib of Boynton Beach, Florida, his son, Ronald Wainrib of Framingham, his daughter Diana Wainrib and her husband Al Hamilton of Southborough, his granddaughter, Julie Wainrib Connelly and her husband Sean of Southborough, his granddaughter Andrea Hamilton and her husband John of Sunnyvale, California, his grandson Douglas Hamilton of Little Rock, Arkansas, his grandson Joshua Wainrib of Oxford, his granddaughter Specialist Leslie Hamilton, currently based in Augusta, Georgia, his great-granddaughter, Avery Connelly, and two soon-to-be born great-grandchildren.
