The Berkshire Bach Society concludes its 2018-2019 season with a solo piano recital by Simone Dinnerstein playing works of Franҫois Couperin, Robert Schumann, Erik Satie, and Philip Glass. Dinnerstein is known for her highly-personal recital programs and rose to prominence in 2007 with her recording of J.S. Bach’s Goldberg Variations, which reached No. 1 on the U.S. Billboard Classical Chart in its first week of sales, and swept the French Diapason D’Or award and the Best of 2007 lists at The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, and The New Yorker Magazine.
In 2018 Simone Dinnerstein premiered Philip Glass’s Concerto No. 3 for Piano and Strings that he wrote specifically for Dinnerstein and that grew out of conversations between composer and performer about J.S. Bach’s music and its relevance today.
The choice of works for Dinnerstein’s Berkshire Bach recital is all about flow, and explores how the composers play with time, rhythm, and pulse in diverse ways over a three hundred-year period. From two short, exquisite, and highly sophisticated Baroque keyboard pieces by Couperin to the mesmerizing and hauntingly beautiful textures of Glass’s Mad Rush from 1979, Dinnerstein continually teases out similarities and highlights affinities between and among the works that surprise and enlighten. Her interpretations of Satie’s hypnotic Gnossienne No. 3 and Schumann’s Arabesque and Kreisleriana are equally special, and extend the opportunity to share her “lean, knowing and unpretentious elegance” (The New Yorker) and her “majestic originality of vision” (The Independent).
